⤢ Full screenA pilgrim through this lonely world,
The blessed Saviour passed;
A mourner all his life was he,
A dying Lamb at last.
That tender heart that felt for all,
For all its life-blood gave;
It found on earth no resting-place,
Save only in the grave.
Such was our Lord; and shall we fear
The cross, with all its scorn?
Or love a faithless, evil world,
That wreathed his brow with thorn?
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «311» (large) with the reference line «120, 227, 204.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 120, 227 or 204); the hymn stands in the lower half of the right column of p. 102, below hymn 310, and ends there, at the foot of the page, with «Sir Edward Denny.» in italics. The opening words are set «A PILGRIM» — a full capital A, then «PILGRIM» in small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («passed ;», «Lord ;», «scorn ?», «thorn ?»); it is closed up here. In stanza 3, line 3 the print has no word space after the comma («faithless,evil»); the words are separated here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «life-blood», «resting-place»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
