⤢ Full screenWe're bound for the land of the pure and the holy,The home of the happy, the kingdom of love;Ye wanderers from God, in the broad road of folly,O say, will you go to the Eden above?
Will you go, will you go,Will you go, will you go?O say, will you go to the Eden above?
In that blessed land, neither sighing nor anguishCan breathe in the fields where the glorified rove:Ye heart-burdened ones, who in misery languish,O say, will you go to the Eden above?
Nor fraud, nor deceit, nor the hand of oppression,Can injure the dwellers in that holy grove; No wickedness there, not a shade of transgression;O say, will you go to the Eden above?
No poverty there, no, the saints are all wealthy,The heirs of His glory whose nature is love;No sickness can reach them, that country is healthy;O say, will you go to the Eden above?
And yet, guilty sinner, we would not forsake thee,We halt yet a moment as onward we move;O, come to thy Lord! in his arms he will take thee,And bear thee along to the Eden above.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE SINNER—WARNING AND INVITATION.»; hymn number «425» (large), tune name «WILL YOU GO? 12s & 11s. P.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «P.» smaller), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear in system 1, two lines between braces with «1.» before the opening brace: the first line (verse lines 1–2) is sung the first time through system 1, the second (verse lines 3–4) on the repeat (end-repeat sign at the end of the system, no start sign). System 2 is headed «Chorus.» and carries the chorus once, without a stanza number; it is sung after every stanza (it is not printed again with the text stanzas). In the interlinear lines «wanderers», «happy», «kingdom» and (chorus) «Eden» are printed whole under two notes each; «ho - ly», «fol - ly», «E - den» with spaced hyphens, «a-bove?» tight. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text below the music in two columns (2–3 left, 4–5 right); each verse is broken in two by the column width (turnover indented) and is written here as one line; two words broken by the column are joined: «trans-/gression» (stanza 3) → «transgression», «for-/sake» (stanza 5) → «forsake». «Anon.» in bold italics after stanza 5. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 In»); they are numbered «2.» … here like stanza 1. The print sets a thin space before «;», «?» and «!» («grove ;», «above ?», «Lord !»); it is closed up here; the printer's curly apostrophe of «We're» is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («His glory» with a capital H in stanza 4, «his arms» lower-case in stanza 5).
