⤢ Full screenO speed thee, Christian, on thy way,And to thy armor cling; With girded loins the call obeyThat grace and mercy bring. There is a battle to be fought,An upward race to run,A crown of glory to be sought,A victory to be won.
The shield of faith repels the dartThat Satan's hand may throw; His arrow cannot reach thy heartIf Christ control the bow.The glowing lamp of prayer will lightThee on thy anxious road;'Twill keep the goal of heaven in sight,And guide thee to thy God.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «487» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 157, under hymn 486, with the reference line «83, 450.» in italic figures beside it (the 3 is ink-filled and looks like an 8 at normal size; see uncertainties) (sing to the tunes of hymns 83 VARINA or 450 JERUSALEM, both C. M. D.; no meter is printed — the eight lines 8.6.8.6.8.6.8.6 are C. M. D., like the referenced tunes). Stanza 1 fills the foot of the left column; stanza 2 opens the right column («2 The shield of faith repels the dart»). Stanzas numbered «1», «2» without periods (written «1.», «2.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 indented. The first words «O SPEED» are set «O» + «SPEED» in capitals and small capitals; written «O speed». «Anon.» in italics after stanza 2 (right column). The print sets a thin space before «;» («cling ;», «throw ;», «road ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («Satan's», «'Twill»). Spelling («armor»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
