Lord of my life, O may thy praise

  • No. 547
  • Metre C. M.
  • Words Anne Steele.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Lord of my life, O may thy praiseEmploy my noblest powers,Whose goodness lengthens out my days,And fills the circling hours.

2

While many spent the night in sighs,And restless pains and woes,In gentle sleep I closed my eyes,And undisturbed repose.

3

O let the same parental careMy waking hours attend; From every danger, every snare,My trembling steps defend:

4

Smile on my moments as they roll,And guide my future days; And let thy goodness fill my soulWith gratitude and praise.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «547» (large) in the lower half of the left column of p. 180, under hymn 546's «Isaac Watts.», with the reference line «114, 179, 147.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 114 HOWARD, 179 ORTONVILLE or 147 BELMONT, all C. M.; no meter is printed — the four lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M., like the referenced tunes). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «LORD» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Lord». «Anne Steele.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («attend ;», «defend :», «days ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
