Once more, my soul, the rising day

  • No. 548
  • Metre C. M.
  • Words Isaac Watts.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Once more, my soul, the rising daySalutes thy waking eye;Once more, my voice, thy tribute payTo Him who rules on high.

2

Night unto night his name repeats,The day renews the sound,Wide as the heavens on which he sitsTo turn the seasons round.

3

'T is he supports my mortal frame; My tongue shall speak his praise:My sins might rouse his wrath to flame,But yet his wrath delays.

4

O God, let all my hours be thine,While I enjoy the light; Then shall my sun in smiles decline,And bring a peaceful night.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «548» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 180, under the music of hymn 546, with the reference line «354, 369, 179,» in italic figures beside it — the line ends in a comma, not a period (sing to the tunes of hymns 354 WOODLAND, 369 MELODY or 179 ORTONVILLE, all C. M.; no meter is printed — the four lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M., like the referenced tunes). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «ONCE» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Once». «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («eye ;», «frame ;», «praise :», «light ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («'T is»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
