When waves of trouble round me swell,My soul is not dismayed;I hear a voice I know full well,—"'Tis I; be not afraid."

The first word is set «WHEN» — «W» full capital, «HEN» in small capitals; written in ordinary type here. Line 2 of each stanza is indented; line 4 (the closing quotation) starts at the margin of lines 1 and 3, its opening quotation marks hanging slightly to the right. Every stanza ends with the quoted line, printed with double opening quotes followed by an apostrophe: in stanza 1 «"'Tis I;» (set close), in stanzas 2–4 «"'T is I;» (with a space between «T» and «is») — each written as printed. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («dismayed ;», «I ;», «crossed ;», «aid !», «shade ;»); it is closed up here, and the quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight.
