⤢ Full screenFather, I know that all my lifeIs portioned out for me;The changes that are sure to comeI do not fear to see;I ask thee for a present mindIntent on pleasing thee.
I ask thee for a thoughtful love,Through constant watching wise,To meet the glad with joyful smiles,And wipe the weeping eyes;A heart at leisure from itself,To soothe and sympathize.
I would not have the restless willThat hurries to and fro,Seeking for some great thing to do,Or secret thing to know;I would be treated as a child,And guided where I go.
Wherever in the world I am,In whatsoe'er estate,I have a fellowship with hearts,To keep and cultivate;A work of lowly love to doFor Him on whom I wait.
I ask thee for the daily strength,To none that ask denied,A mind to blend with outward lifeWhile keeping at thy side;Content to fill a little space,If thou be glorified.
And if some things I do not askThou givest, Lord, to me,Then shall my spirit rise the moreWith grateful love to thee;Still careful, not to serve thee less,But more, and perfectly.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—TRUST AND RESIGNATION.»; hymn number «744» (large), tune name «WARING. 8s & 6s. 6L.» centred over the music, «ARR. FROM LOUIS SPOHR.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system, with «1.» before «Father,»; it is set in a condensed type as whole words, without syllable hyphens and with very tight word spacing («thatall my life», «tha t are», «onpleasing») — ordinary word spaces are written here. Stanzas 2–6 follow as text, numbered «2»–«6» (written «2.»–«6.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); stanzas 2–5 fill the left column, stanza 6 begins at the foot of the left column («And if some things I do not ask / Thou givest, Lord, to me, / Then shall my spirit rise the more») and ends at the top of the right column, followed by «Anna L. Waring.» in italics. Lines 2, 4 and 6 of each stanza are indented in the print. The print's thin space before «;» is closed up («me;», «eyes;», «know;», «cultivate;», «side;», «thee;»). Spelling («whatsoe'er», «sympathize»), punctuation and capitals («Him») are the print's.
