1

The tempter to my soul hath said,"There is no help in God for thee;"Lord! lift thou up thy servant's head;My glory, shield, and solace be.

2

Thus to the Lord I raised my cry;He heard me from his holy hill;At his command the waves rolled by;He beckoned, and the winds were still.

3

I laid me down and slept,—I woke;—Thou, Lord, my spirit didst sustain;Bright, from the east, the morning broke;Thy comforts rose on me again.

4

I will not fear, though armed throngsCompass my steps in all their wrath;Salvation to the Lord belongs; His presence guards his people's path.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN GUIDANCE AND PROTECTION.» (no dash between «CHRISTIAN» and «GUIDANCE» on this page; the hymn opens the section); hymn number «746» (large, left), tune name «ZEPHYR. L. M.» centred over the music, «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is set between the staves, one text line (two verse lines) per system, with «1.» before «The»; «glo - ry» and «sol - ace» are printed in syllables and joined here; «tempter» and «servant's» are printed whole. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the italic reference line «212, 108, 304.» (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 212, 108 or 304); «James Montgomery.» in italics after stanza 4. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 Thus»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. Lines 2 and 4 of each text stanza are indented in the print. The printer's thin space before «;» and «!» («cry ;», «hill ;», «Lord !») is closed up here. The dashes of «slept,—I woke;—» and the quotation marks of stanza 1 are the print's (written straight).
