1

He leadeth me! O blessed thought!O words with heavenly comfort fraught!Whate'er I do, where'er I be,Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.

Refrain

He leadeth me, he leadeth me,By his own hand he leadeth me:His faithful follower I would be,For by his hand he leadeth me.

2

Sometimes 'mid scenes of deepest gloom,Sometimes where Eden's bowers bloom,By waters still, o'er troubled sea,—Still 't is his hand that leadeth me!

3

Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine,Nor ever murmur nor repine,Content whatever lot I see,Since 't is my God that leadeth me.

4

And when my task on earth is done,When by thy grace the victory's won,E'en death's cold wave I will not flee,Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHRISTIAN—GUIDANCE AND PROTECTION.»; hymn number «749» (large), tune name «HE LEADETH ME. L. M. D.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals, the «D.» smaller), «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY» at the right (capitals and small capitals; the final mark looks like a colon on this scan — see uncertainties.md); printed vertically in the right margin beside system 3, reading downwards, «By per. Biglow & Main.» (the upper half of the letters is clipped by the edge of the scan). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system, with «1.» before «He»: «1. He lead - eth me! O bless-ed thought! O words with heavenly com - fort fraught! Whate'er I do, wher-» / «e'er I be, Still 'tis God's hand that lead - eth me. He lead-eth me, he lead - eth me, By» / «his own hand he lead-eth me: His faith-ful fol-lower I would be, For by his hand he lead-eth me.» «Refrain.» stands above the treble staff of system 2, over «He lead-eth me»; the refrain is printed once, without a stanza number, and is sung after every stanza. «wher- / e'er» is divided by the system break (joined «where'er» here); «Whate'er» is printed whole under two notes (the last pickup of system 1's third line and the dotted quarter after it) and «heavenly» whole under three (a quarter and two beamed eighths: heav'n-ly, the second syllable held over the eighths). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «667, 518.» in italic figures (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 667 or 518), numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book), followed by «J. H. Gilmore.» in italics. In stanzas 2 and 3 the print sets «'t is» with a space (kept); stanza 1 under the music has «'tis» closed (kept). The print sets a thin space before «!» and «:» («me !», «thought !», «me :»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight. All four lines of each stanza are set flush in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
