⤢ Full screenEternal Beam of light divine,Thou Fount of unexhausted love,In whom the Father's glories shine,Through earth beneath, and heaven above;Jesus, the weary wanderer's rest,Give me thy easy yoke to bear,With steadfast patience arm my breast,With spotless love and lowly fear.
Thankful I take the cup from thee,Prepared and mingled by thy skill;Though bitter to the taste it be,Powerful the wounded soul to heal.Be thou, O Rock of Ages, nigh!So shall each murmuring thought be gone,And grief, and fear, and care shall fly,As clouds before the midday sun.
Speak to my warring passions, "Peace;"Say to my trembling heart, "Be still;"Thy power my strength and fortress is,For all things serve thy sovereign will.O death! where is thy sting? Where nowThy boasted victory, O grave?Who shall contend with God? or whoCan hurt whom God delights to save?
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «750» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 244, under the music and stanzas of hymn 749, with the italic reference line «518, 994.» (= sing to the tunes of hymns 518 or 994; the line ends with a period). Three stanzas of eight lines, numbered «1»–«3» without a full stop (written «1.»–«3.» here): stanza 1 begins at the foot of the left column and its last four lines («Jesus, the weary wanderer's rest, …») continue at the head of the right column; stanzas 2 and 3 follow in the right column. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented in the print (kept here). Two verse lines are too long for the column and run over onto a second, further-indented print line: «Through earth beneath, and heaven / above;» (stanza 1) and «So shall each murmuring thought be / gone,» (stanza 2) — each is ONE verse line here. The first word «ETERNAL» is set in capitals and small capitals (written «Eternal» here). «Charles Wesley.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 3. No meter is printed (the text is L. M. D., like the tunes referred to). The print's thin space before «!», «;» and «?» is closed up; the double quotation marks of stanza 3 and the apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
