Sweet rivers of redeeming love

  • No. 806
  • Metre C. M.
  • Words Anon.
  • 6 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Sweet rivers of redeeming loveI see before me lie;Had I the pinions of a dove,I 'd to those rivers fly.

2

I 'd rise superior to my pain,With joy outstrip the wind;I 'd cross bold Jordan's stormy main,And leave the world behind.

3

A few more days, or years at most,My troubles will be o'er;I hope to join the heavenly hostOn Canaan's happy shore.

4

My rapturous soul shall drink and feastIn love's unbounded sea:The glorious hope of endless restIs ravishing to me.

5

O, come, my Saviour, come away,And bear me to the sky!Nor let thy chariot wheels delay;Make haste and bring it nigh.

6

I long to see thy glorious face,And in thine image shine; To triumph in victorious grace,And be forever thine.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «806» (large) in the left column of p. 264, under «Anon.» of hymn 805, with the reference line «201, 114, 354.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 201 LITCHFIELD, 114 HOWARD or 354 WOODLAND, all C. M.; no meter is printed — the stanzas are 8.6.8.6, C. M., like the referenced tunes; the page OCR read the last number as «364», but the glyph is a 5 and hymn 364 has no tune). Stanzas 1–4 stand in the left column; stanzas 5–6 continue at the top of the right column, followed by «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned, before hymn 807 — they belong to 806, not to 805 (they have none of 805's «We 'll be gathered home» lines; reading order is the left column, then the right). Stanzas numbered «1»–«6» without periods (written «1.»–«6.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «SWEET» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Sweet». «I 'd» is set with a space before the apostrophe in all three places (stanza 1 line 4, stanza 2 lines 1 and 3) and is kept so; «o'er», «Jordan's», «Canaan's» and «love's» are set tight. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» (e.g. «o'er ;», «delay ;», «shine ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
