1

There is a King of glory,Ere long on earth to rise,Sung in prophetic story,Descending from the skies; The Babe of Bethlehem, 't is he;It is the man of Calvary,—Not crowned with thorns, and gory,But crowned with glory now!Not crowned with thorns to-day,Not mocked and led away,But crowned with everlasting glory now!

2

He cometh, cometh speedy,To save his suffering saints,—Saints groaning, waiting, ready,—And endeth their complaints:With joy they meet him in the air,And shout the swelling triumph there; No longer poor and needy,But crowned with glory now!Not one's reviled to-day!None stumble in the way—All crowned with everlasting glory now.

3

O tears, and sin, and sighing,Now let your prisoner go,Discharged from pain and dyingAnd from a world of woe;I go to Christ, he comes to me,We meet in bright eternity,On clouds he cometh flying,—On clouds of glory now!Victorious in his wars,Full many a palm he bears,And crowns of everlasting glory now!

4

O, what is tribulation,And all the ills I bear,Compared with this salvation,And all the glory there?Behold a city fair and high,Bright capital of earth and sky,The joy of all creation,And filled with glory now!The armies of his grace,Triumphant reach the place:'T is glory, everlasting glory, now!

5

There every sight that pleases,There every sound that cheers,There sweet, immortal breezes,Inspire the balmy years; There all the just join in a band,From every age, from every land,While o'er them reigns King Jesus,With crowns of glory now!The people of his grace,Have reached the heavenly place:'T is glory, everlasting glory, now!

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «870» (large), tune name «KING OF GLORY. P. M.» centred over the music, «A. CRITHFIELD, ARR. BY E. BARNES.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, one text line per system, with «1.» before «There»; stanza 1 below is its words assembled as verse lines (the lines follow the music's phrases and the form of stanzas 2–5). Under the staves «glo - ry», «sto - ry», «to - day», «a - way», «glo - ry» are spaced syllables; «prophetic», «Descending», «Bethlehem,», «Calvary,—», «gory,», «glory», «everlasting» are printed whole under several notes. «to - day» is written «to-day» here, the book's spelling of the word (stanza 2: «to-day!»), and «a - way» «away». Stanzas 2–5 follow as text in two columns, numbered «2»–«5» without a full stop (numbered «2.» etc. here like stanza 1), 11 lines each with three levels of indentation (not reproduced); «Anon.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:», «!» and «?»; it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight («'t is», «'T is», «one's», «o'er»). No reference line is printed for this hymn. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
