Glad tidings! glad tidings! the kingdom is near,And our glorious Deliverer will soon, soon appearIn the clouds of bright glory to earth he will come,And the angels will bear us to heaven, our home.

2

Glad tidings! glad tidings! the kingdom is near;On the plains of fair Canaan we soon shall appear; There with harps tuned celestial our voices we'll raiseTo the Lord, our Redeemer, in accents of praise.

3

Glad tidings! glad tidings! the kingdom is near; Then rejoice, ye sad exiles, and be of good cheer.Lo! the promised possession we soon shall receive,And with Jesus in glory eternally live.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «WAITING FOR CHRIST—CLOSING WORK.»; hymn number «871» (large), tune name «CHARIOT. 12s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «ARR. FROM J. WILLIAMS.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, in a bold condensed face, one line per system with «1.» before it: «Glad tidings! glad tid-ings! the king-dom is near, And our glo-rious De - liv-erer will soon, soon ap-pear» (no punctuation after «appear» under the staves) and «In the clouds of bright glo - ry to earth he will come, And the an - gels will bear us to heav - en, our home.»; the syllables are joined into words here, one verse line per line (each system holds two lines of the hymn). Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music; each 12-syllable line is broken by the column width («the kingdom / is near;», «we soon shall / appear;» …) and is joined here into one line (four joins per stanza). No reference line is printed. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («tidings !», «near ;», «Lo !»); it is closed up here. Straight apostrophes are used for the printer's curly ones («we'll»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. «Anon.» in italics closes the hymn under stanza 3.
