The Lord will come! but not the same

  • No. 884
  • Metre L. M.
  • Words Reginald Heber.
  • 5 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

The Lord will come! but not the sameAs once in lowly form he came—A silent Lamb to slaughter led,The bruised, the suffering, and the dead.

2

The Lord will come!—a dreadful form,With wreath of flame and robe of storm,On cherub wings and wings of wind,Anointed Judge of human-kind.

3

Can this be He who wont to strayA pilgrim on the world's highway;By power oppressed, and mocked by pride?O God! is this the Crucified?

4

Ye men of earth, to mountains call;Bid ragged rocks upon you fall;Seek, in the cavern's gloomy maze,A refuge from his piercing gaze.

5

But saints who here have waited long,Now raise with joy the choral song,Lo! this is he, our coming Lord,He saves according to his word.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «884» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 296, under the end of hymn 883 («Anon.»), with the reference line «223, 875, 301.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 223 BURTON, 875 SESSIONS or 301 ROCKINGHAM, all L. M.; no meter is printed — four lines of eight syllables, L. M., like the referenced tunes). Stanzas 1–3 in the left column; stanzas 4–5 continue at the top of the right column («Ye men of earth, to mountains call;», «But saints who here have waited long,»), followed by «Reginald Heber.» in italics, then hymn 885. Five stanzas numbered «1»–«5» without periods (written «1.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book). The first word «THE» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «The». The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «?» («come !», «highway ;», «pride ?», «God !», «Crucified ?», «call ;», «fall ;», «Lo !»); it is closed up here. «came—» and «come!—a» with em dashes, «world's», «cavern's» with straight apostrophes, «human-kind» hyphenated, «He» capitalised in stanza 3 and «ragged» in stanza 4 as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
