⤢ Full screenWhy should we tremble to conveyThe Christian to the tomb? There once the flesh of Jesus lay,And left a long perfume.
The graves of all his saints he blest,And softened every bed;Where should the dying members rest,But with their dying Head?
Thence he arose, ascending high,And showed our feet the way:Up to the Lord we all shall flyAt the great rising day.
Then let the last loud trumpet sound,And bid our kindred rise:Awake, ye nations under ground;Ye saints, ascend the skies.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «935» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 314, with the reference line «943, 147.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 943 LILLIE or 147 BELMONT, both C. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M.). Stanza 1 stands at the foot of the left column; stanzas 2–4 continue at the top of the right column (the text flows down the left column and then the right one; the numbering «1» → «2»–«4» and the author line «Isaac Watts.» after stanza 4 confirm it). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first word «WHY» is set in a capital and small capitals; written «Why». «Isaac Watts.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 4 (right column). The print sets a thin space before «?», «;» and «:» («tomb ?», «bed ;», «way :»); it is closed up here. Spelling («blest», «under ground»), punctuation and capitals («Head», «Lord») are the print's.
