Death and Resurrection

A lovely infant sleeps in death

  • No. 936
  • Metre C. M.
  • Words Anon.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

A lovely infant sleeps in death;—How beautiful and fair!Yes, even now, though void of breath,God's impress still is there.

2

And if thus fair and lovely here,Beneath death's icy hand,O will it not be beauteous there,'Mid the immortal band?

3

When Jesus bids it rise and liveWith all the saints in light,A glorious body then he'll give,Resplendent to the sight!

4

Though nature weeps when lovely tiesSo strongly bound are riven,Yet faith the Saviour's words applies,"Of such the realms of heaven!"

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «936» (large) in the right column of p. 314, below the end of hymn 935, with the reference line «943, 179.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 943 LILLIE or 179 ORTONVILLE, both C. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.6.8.6 are C. M.). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. The first words «A LOVELY» are set with a capital A and «LOVELY» in small capitals; written «A lovely». «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?» («death ;—», «fair !», «band ?», «heaven !»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes and quotation marks are written straight («God's», «death's», «'Mid», «he'll», «Saviour's», «"Of such … heaven!"»). Spelling («Saviour», «beauteous»), punctuation and the dash «death;—» are the print's.
