The time is near when Zion's sons,With rapturous joy shall sing the songForetold by seers—anointed ones:We have a city great and strong,We have a city great and strong.

2

Open, ye gates! The glorious KingApproaches with a holy throng;Open, ye gates! Saints, angels, singOn golden harps the victor's song!

3

O righteous nation! enter in,That kept the law of truth below,Enter the place, all free from sin,Where life's pure waters gently flow.

4

Within these walls shall they remain,Who trusted, mighty Lord! in thee:Death, their last enemy, is slain; They have a right to life's fair tree.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «REWARD OF SAINTS.» (hymn 973 opens the section «Reward of Saints», 973–1010 in the CONTENTS); hymn number «973» (large), tune name «ANVERN. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right in the composer slot (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «The»: «1. The time is near when Zi-on's sons, With rapturous joy shall sing the song Fore - told by» under system 1 and «seers—anointed ones: We have a cit - y great and strong, We have a cit - y great and strong.» under system 2; its verse lines are given here as poetry, and it includes the repetition of the last line that the music prints (the tune sings the fourth line of every stanza twice; stanzas 2–4 print it once). «rapturous» and «anointed» are printed whole under two and three notes; «Fore - told» is divided only by the music («Foretold» here). The reference line «223, 624, 136.» in italic figures stands centred over stanza 2 (sing also to the tunes of hymns 223 BURTON, 624 UXBRIDGE or 136 WARE, all L. M.). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, numbered «2»–«4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 indented. «R. F. Cottrell.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («ones :», «gates !», «throng ;», «thee :»); it is closed up here. The apostrophes («Zion's», «victor's», «life's») are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
