There is a city, fair and bright

  • No. 993

1

There is a city, fair and bright,That eye hath never seen,Where ever dwelleth pure delight,And heavenly praise serene.High walls of precious gems and goldSecure from every ill;Unheard-of bliss and joys untoldWithin its borders dwell.

2

There living waters ceaseless flowFrom out the heavenly throne; There fairest fruits perennial grow,And want is never known.Nor sun by day nor moon by nightThis heavenly city needs,But glory sheds a crystal lightThat never wanes nor fades.

3

Nor sin nor sorrow cometh there,Nor ever death nor pain,In love abiding, free from care,The saints forever reign.Among the many mansions there,O, is there one for me?Dear Lord, an humble place prepare,That I may dwell with thee.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «993» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 335, under the stanzas of hymn 992, with the italic reference line «989, 486.» beside it (= sing to the tunes of hymns 989 VARINA or 486 MOUNT BETHEL, both C. M. D.; hymn 992 OAKLEY, printed just above, carries the same reference line). Three stanzas of eight lines (C. M. D., 8.6.8.6.8.6.8.6; no meter is printed): stanza 1 begins at the foot of the left column (lines 1–4) and continues at the head of the right column (lines 5–8, «High walls of precious gems and gold …»), then stanzas 2 and 3 in the right column. Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without periods (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented. The first word «THERE» is set in capitals and small capitals (written «There» here). «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned, at the foot of the right column. The print sets a thin space before «;» in «throne ;»; it is closed up here. Ink stains lie over lines 1 and 3 of stanza 2; the type under them is legible (see `uncertainties.md`). Spelling («an humble»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
