⤢ Full screenGlorious things of thee are spoken,Zion, city of our God!He whose word cannot be broken,Formed thee for his own abode:On the Rock of Ages founded,What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded,Thou mayest smile at all thy foes.
See! the streams of living waters,Springing from eternal love,Well supply thy sons and daughters,And all fear of want remove:Who can faint while such a riverEver flows their thirst to assuage?—Grace, which, like the Lord, the Giver,Never fails from age to age.
Round each habitation hovering,See the cloud and fire appearFor a glory and a covering,Showing that the Lord is near! Thus deriving from their bannerLight by night and shade by day,Safe they feed upon the mannaWhich he gives them when they pray.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1007» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 343, under stanza 4 of hymn 1006, then in bold italics and brackets «[Tune, Harwell, No. 132.]» (sing to the tune HARWELL, hymn 132, 8s & 7s D.), then «8s & 7s D.» in bold with «D.» in small capitals. Three stanzas of eight lines: lines 1–2 of stanza 1 stand in the left column, lines 3–8 continue at the head of the right column, followed by stanzas 2 and 3; the stanza numbers are printed without a full stop («1 GLORIOUS», «2 See», «3 Round»), written «1.»–«3.» here as in the other deliveries of this book. The first word «GLORIOUS» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Glorious». Odd lines flush, even lines indented, as printed. «John Newton.» in italics at the right after stanza 3. The printer's thin space before «!», «:» and «?» («God !», «abode :», «repose ?», «See !», «remove :», «near !») is closed up here; the apostrophe is written straight («salvation's»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Thou mayest smile», «to assuage?—»).
