1

Soldiers of the cross, arise;Gird you with your armor bright;Mighty are your enemies,Hard the battle you must fight;

2

O'er a faithless, fallen worldRaise your banner in the sky,Let it float there, wide unfurled,Bear it onward, lift it high.

3

'Mid the homes of want and woe,Strangers to the living word,Let the Saviour's herald go,Let the voice of hope be heard.

4

Guard the helpless, seek the strayed,Comfort troubles, banish grief;With the Spirit's sword arrayed,Scatter sin and unbelief:

5

Be the banner still unfurled,Bear it bravely still abroad,Till the kingdoms of the worldAre the kingdoms of the Lord.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—MINISTRY AND MISSIONS.»; hymn number «1051» (large; the «5» lies under an ink blot, the number is confirmed by 1052 below it), tune name «MONKLAND. 7s.» centred over the music, «JOHN B. WILKES.» at the right in capitals and small capitals (the letters «ILKE» lie under an ink blot: «W», traces of «IL», and «S.» are legible — see `uncertainties.md`). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves of the two systems, with «1.» before «Sol-»; the two-note syllables are hyphenated as printed (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`). The reference line «904, 605, 821.» in italic figures stands under the music, above stanza 2 (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 904 HENDON, 605 ROOT or 821 PLEYEL, all 7s.). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in two columns (2–3 left, 4–5 right), numbered «2»–«5» without periods (written «2.»–«5.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented, and stanza 1 is laid out the same way here. «Charles Wesley.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:»; it is closed up here. Spelling («armor», «Saviour's»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
