1

Our Saviour, meek and lowly, came,And taught his flock to be the same;He an example set, that theyMight willingly his word obey.

2

For on that night he was betrayed,He for us all a pattern laid:Before his supper he did eat,He rose and washed his brethren's feet.

3

'T was Christ, the Lord of earth and sky!He laid his royal garments by,And washed their feet, to show that weShould always kind and humble be.

4

But Peter said: "It shall not be!Thou shalt not stoop to washing me!"O, that no Christian here may say,"I'm too unworthy to obey!"

5

"You call me Lord, and Master too:Then do as I have done to you;All my commands and counsel heed,And show your love by word and deed.

6

"Ye shall be happy if ye knowAnd do these things by faith, below; For I'll protect you till I come,And then I'll take you to your home."

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—LORD'S SUPPER.» (the hymn opens the section «Lord's Supper», 1096–1125 in the CONTENTS); hymn number «1096» (large, left), tune name «ZEPHYR. L. M.» centred over the music, «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is set between the staves, one text line (two verse lines) per system, with «1.» before «Our»; «low - ly», «ex - am - ple», «will - ing - ly» and «o - bey» are printed in syllables and joined here; «Saviour,» is printed whole (and set close to «Our»). Stanzas 2–6 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the italic reference line «914, 431, 316.» (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 914, 431 or 316); «Anon.» in italics after stanza 6. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 For»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. All four lines of each text stanza are set flush in the print (no indentation), and they are written so here. «'T was» (stanza 3) is set with a gap between «'T» and «was», and is written so (as elsewhere in this book); the thin space after the apostrophe of «I' m» (stanza 4) is closed up («I'm»), as in the earlier deliveries. The printer's thin space before «: ; !» («laid :», «sky !», «said :», «be !», «me !», «obey !», «too :», «you ;», «below ;») is closed up here; quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight. The «b» of «below» (stanza 6) is damaged in this copy (its ascender is broken, so it looks like «ɒelow»); the word is «below». Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
