The pride we have cherished we gladly forsake; Now of thy meek spirit, O, let us partake! And as we obey, may our longing hearts prove'T is blessed to serve one another in love.
If ill-will or envy have darkened our life,May pure love now enter, expelling all strife; With brotherly kindness each other we greet,As now in God's presence we wash the saints' feet.
O, lend us the power of thy presence Divine,Our hearts to the love of this duty incline,And wash from our lives every unholy stain,Till naught of impurity with us remain.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—LORD'S SUPPER.»; hymn number «1124» (large, left), tune name «HUMILITY. 11s.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals), «L. A. LOGAN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Draw»: system 1 = verse lines 1–2, system 2 = lines 3–4. «to-day» is printed with its hyphen; «im - part», «hum-ble» and «pen - i - tent» are printed with syllable hyphens under the notes and are written whole here; «ord'nance» is printed with its apostrophe. The reference line «512, 864, 783.» in italic figures stands over stanza 2 (the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 512, 864 or 783). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in two columns, numbered «2», «3», «4» without periods (written «2.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); stanza 3 runs from the foot of the left column (lines 1–2) to the top of the right column (lines 3–4); «Anon.» in italics, right-aligned, closes the hymn. Several verse lines are too long for the column and turn over (the turnovers «forsake;», «prove», «strife;», «greet,», «saints' feet.», «Divine,», «stain,» are indented in the print); each verse line is one line here. Lines are not otherwise indented. «'T is» is printed with the space after the apostrophe. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («forsake ;», «partake !», «strife ;»); it is closed up here. The curly apostrophes of «ord'nance», «'T is», «God's» and «saints'» are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
