⤢ Full screenMust Simon bear his cross alone,And all the world go free? No! there's a cross for every one,And there's a cross for me.Yes, there's a cross on Calvary,Through which by faith the crown I see;To me 'tis pardon bringing:O, that's the cross for me,O, that's the cross for me,O, that's the cross for me.
How faithful does the Saviour proveTo those who serve him here! They now may taste his perfect love,And joy to hail him near.Yes, perfect love will dry the tear,And cast out all tormenting fearWhich round my heart is clinging:O, that's the love for me, etc.
We'll bear the consecrated crossTill from the cross we're free,And then go home to wear the crown; For there's a crown for me.Yes, there's a crown in heaven above,The purchase of my Saviour's love,For me at his appearing:O, that's the crown for me, etc.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «MISCELLANEOUS—OLD MELODIES.»; hymn number «1173» (large), tune name «THE CROSS AND CROWN.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «ARRANGED.» at the right; no meter and no reference line. Stanza 1 is interlinear, in a bold face. Between the staves of system 1, in braces with «1.» before them: «Must Si - mon bear his cross a - lone, And all the world go free?» (first time, first ending «1st.») and «No! there's a cross for ev - ery one, And (omit.) . . . . .» (second time: «(omit.)» in italics = skip the first ending), with «there's a cross for me.» right of the closing brace, under the second ending «2d.»; system 2 carries «Yes, there's a cross on Calvary, Through which by faith the crown I see; To me 'tis par - don» and system 3 «bringing: O, that's the cross for me, O, that's the cross for me, O, that's the cross for me.». Stanza 1 below is assembled in the order sung; «Si - mon», «a - lone», «ev - ery», «par - don» are written as whole words. The refrain line «O, that's the cross for me» is sung three times under the music (three lines here); stanzas 2 and 3 print it once followed by «etc.», as here. Stanzas 2–3 follow as text in the left and right columns, numbered «2» and «3» without a full stop (numbered «2.», «3.» here like stanza 1); lines 2, 4 and 7 of each stanza are indented in the print. «Thomas Shepherd.» in bold italics at the right after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «:» («here !», «crown ;», «clinging :», «appearing :») and before the apostrophe of «We 'll», «we 're», «there 's», «that 's» (stanza 3); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
