1

Fierce and wild the storm is ragingRound a helpless bark,On to doom 't is swiftly drivingO'er the waters dark!

Chorus.

Joy, O, joy, behold the Saviour;Joy, O, joy, the message hear;"I'll stand by until the morning;I've come to save you, do not fear;"Yes, I'll stand by until the morning;I've come to save you; do not fear, do not fear.

2

Weary, helpless, hopeless seamen,Fainting on the deck,With what joy they hail their Saviour,As he hails the wreck!

3

On a wild and stormy ocean,Sinking neath the wave,Souls that perish heed the message,—Christ has come to save!

4

Daring death thy soul to rescue,He in love has come;Leave the wreck, and in him trusting,Thou shalt reach thy home!

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1194» (large, left), title «I'LL STAND BY YOU.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it, centred, the epigraph «"Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. So he bringeth them into their desired haven."—Ps. 107: 28-30.» (an ink blot covers the sign between «28» and «30») and, under it, «[This song was suggested by a thrilling incident of a wreck and rescue at sea.]»; «W. W. D.» at the left and «JAMES MCGRANAHAN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no meter, no reference line and no running head are printed. The four stanzas are interlinear, «1.»–«4.» before the lines of system 1; the chorus, headed «CHORUS.», is printed once and is sung after every stanza. The hymn turns the page: its last system stands at the top of the next page (PDF 414, printed 413) under the heading «I'LL STAND BY YOU.—Concluded.». «By permission The John Church Co.» is printed under the music of the first page, above the page number «412». In the chorus the print has two lines of words in its first system: the soprano's «Joy, . . . . . . behold the Saviour; Joy, . . . . . the message hear;» (the dots stand for the held «Joy») over the alto, tenor and bass's «Joy, O, joy, behold the Saviour; Joy, O, joy, the message hear;» — the chorus is given below in the words of the lower line, the upper line after it. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («mes-sage hear ;», «dark !») and in «I 've»; it is closed up here; «'t is» is printed as two words with the apostrophe before the «t» and is kept so. Apostrophes and quotation marks are written straight («O'er», «I'll», «"I'll … fear;"»). Words divided under the notes are joined («rag-ing», «Sav-iour», «mes-sage», «un-til», «morn-ing»); each stanza is set in its four verse lines (the print runs two verse lines on one staff line); the dash of stanza 3 stands before «Christ» as printed («mes - sage, —Christ»). The quoted words of the chorus close with «fear;"» on the first page; the concluding system repeats them without quotation marks and with «you;» for «you,». Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «neath», «him»).
