⤢ Full screenWould you fear to have your windows openThree times each day,If sinners saw that you were kneelingThree times to pray?
Keep your windows open to'ard Jerusalem,Keep your windows open to'ard Jerusalem;Keep your windows open to'ard Jerusalem,And always pray.
Would you offer up a bold petition,If well you knewThat awful den of roaring lionsAwaited you?
Would you kneel believing ev'ry promiseThe Lord has giv'n?Or thinking silent prayer sufficientFor you and heav'n?
The lesson taught is not to offerA world-wide prayer:'Tis duty first, and then the promiseOf heav'nly care.
Then kneel at morning, noon, and evening,Nor ever fearThat others who are unbelievingYour prayer may hear.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1227» (large, left), title «KEEP YOUR WINDOWS OPEN.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Keep Your Windows Open.»); under it the epigraph in three full-width lines («…gave thanks be-/fore his God…», joined here; old-style figures «Dan. 6 : 10.»); on the next line «F. E. B.» at the left (words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music, capitals and small capitals). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All five stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«5.», between the staves of systems 1–2; «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3, and the chorus words are printed once, under systems 3–4; the chorus is sung after every stanza. Each printed line of words carries two verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line. In stanza 4 the words «first,» and «then» are printed in italics. «world-wide» (stanza 4) is a compound printed with its own hyphen under two notes; «windows» (chorus, second and third time) is printed unbroken under two notes; «even - ing,» (stanza 5) is printed in two syllables. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.» The print sets a thin space before «:» and «?» («house :», «prayer :», «you ?»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's («ev'ry», «giv'n», «heav'n», «'Tis», «to'ard»).
