⤢ Full screenAt the sounding of the trumpet, when the saints are gathered home,We will greet each other by the crystal sea (crystal sea); When the Lord himself from heaven to his glory bids them come,What a gath'ring of the faithful that will be!
What a gath'ring of the loved ones, when we meet with one another,At the sounding of the glorious jubilee (jubilee)! What a gath'ring, when the friends and all the dear ones meet each other; What a gath'ring of the faithful that will be!
Upper line of the chorus (soprano, over her held notes, while the other voices sing the first and third lines above); between these she sings the shared words of the lower line («At the sounding of the glorious jubilee», «What a gath'ring of the faithful that will be!»):What a gath'ring, gath'ring,What a gath'ring, gath'ring,
When the angel of the Lord proclaims that time shall be no more,We shall gather, and the saved and ransomed see (gladly see); Then to meet again together, on the bright, celestial shore,What a gath'ring of the faithful that will be!
At the great and final Judgment, when the hidden comes to light,When the Lord in all his glory we shall see (we shall see);At the bidding of our Saviour, "Come, ye blessed, to my right,"What a gath'ring of the faithful that will be!
When the golden harps are sounding, and the angel bands proclaimIn triumphant strains the glorious jubilee (jubilee); Then to meet and join to sing the song of Moses and the Lamb,What a gath'ring of the faithful that will be!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1329» (large, left), title «What a Gathering That will Be!» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «WHAT A GATHERING THAT WILL BE!»); on the next line «J. H. K.» at the left (words), the epigraph «"Gather my saints together unto me."—Ps. 1 : 5.» in the centre (old-style figures) and «J. H. KURZENKNABE.» at the right (music, capitals and small capitals). The quoted verse is Psalm 50:5; the print's «Ps. 1 : 5.» is kept as printed (printer's slip, see `uncertainties.md`). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. The hymn runs over two pages: systems 1–5 on printed p. 540, systems 6–7 on p. 541 under the running head «WHAT A GATHERING.—Concluded.». All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–3; each printed line of words carries one verse line and a half (the verse lines are given here one per line). In the second verse line of every stanza the bass echoes the three syllables just sung, printed in small condensed type and in parentheses inside the line — «(crystal sea);», «(glad-ly see);», «(we shall see );», «(ju-bi-lee);» — given here where the print has it. Every stanza ends with «What a» (printed in each line) and the single line of system 4, «gath-'ring of the faith-ful that will be!», printed once and sung by all four stanzas: it is written out at the end of each stanza here. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the second half of system 4; the chorus words are printed once, under systems 4–7, in two lines: the lower line is the whole chorus text, sung by alto, tenor and bass (and by everyone where the voices join); the upper line is the soprano's words over her held notes («What a gath - - 'ring,», «gath - - - 'ring,» …, with leader hyphens). Stanza 4 prints «ju - bl - lee» (an «l» for the «i»; the echo of the same line has «ju-bi-lee») — kept as printed. Words printed unbroken under two notes («sounding», «trumpet,», «proclaims», «Judgment,», «gath'ring») are words here as everywhere. Under the music of p. 540, centred: «From 'The Song Treasury," by permission.» (the opening quote prints as a single mark). The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «:» («sea) ;», «be !», «1 : 5»); it is closed up here, as is the space in «(we shall see );»; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
