⤢ Full screenThe judgment has set, the books have been opened; How shall we stand in that great dayWhen every thought, and word, and action,God, the righteous Judge, shall weigh?
How shall we stand in that great day?How shall we stand in that great day?Shall we be found before him wanting?Or with our sins all washed away?
The work is begun with those who are sleeping,Soon will the living here be tried,Out of the books of God's remembrance,His decision to abide.
O, how shall we stand that moment of searching,When all our sins those books reveal? When from that court, each case decided,Shall be granted no appeal?
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1337» (large, left), title «HOW SHALL WE STAND IN THE JUDGMENT?» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «How Shall We Stand in the Judgment?»); under it two epigraphs in small roman on three lines, «"Every idle word … in the day of judgment."—Matt. 12 : 36.» and «"For the time is come … of God?"—1 Pet. 4 : 17.» (old-style figures; «at us,what» set without a space after the comma, written «us, what» here); on the next line «F. E. B.» at the left (the words) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (the music, capitals and small capitals). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over the start of system 3, partly under an ink blot; the refrain words fill one line in system 3 and one in system 4. In stanzas 1 and 3 «every thought, and» and «When from that court,» are printed in visibly heavier ink, and a stroke joins «the» and «books» in stanza 2 (over-inking; the letters are legible). Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?»; it is closed up here; curly quotes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
