⤢ Full screenImposture shrinks from light,
And dreads the curious eye;
But sacred truths the test invite,
They bid us search and try.
O may we still maintain
A meek, inquiring mind,
Assured we shall not search in vain,
But hidden treasures find.
With understanding blessed,
Created to be free,
Our faith on man we dare not rest,
We trust alone in thee.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «193» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 66, beside the music of hymn 191, with the reference line «85, 89, 601.» in italics (sing to the tune of hymn 85, 89 or 601); stanzas 1–3, «Anon.» in italics at the end. The first word «IMPOSTURE» is set in capitals and small capitals. In this exemplar an ink blot covers the middle of stanza 2: the word between «meek» and «…ing» in line 2 is entirely hidden (see uncertainties.md); «still» (line 1) and «shall» (line 3) are partly covered but legible. The print sets a thin space before «;» («eye ;»); it is closed up here. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
