1

Ah! guilty sinner, ruined by transgression,What will thy doom be when arrayed in terrorGod shall command thee, covered with pollution,"Up to the judgment, up to the judgment?"

2

Oft he has called thee, but thou would'st not hear him;Mercies and judgments have alike been slighted;Yet he is gracious, and with arms unfoldedWaits to embrace you.

3

But if you trifle with his gracious message,Cleave to the world, and love its guilty pleasures,Mercy, grown weary, will in righteous judgmentLeave you forever.

4

Then you shall call, but he will not regard you;Seek for his favor, yet will never find it;Cry to the rocks to hide you from his presenceDeep in their caverns.

5

O! guilty sinner, hear the voice of warning;Fly to the Saviour, and embrace his pardon:So shall you meet him, and with joy triumphant,Coming to judgment.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE SINNER—WARNING AND INVITATION.»; hymn number «423» (large), tune name «WARNING. P. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Ah!» (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`): «guilt-y», «sin - ner» and «ter - ror» are hyphenated; «ruined», «transgression», «arrayed», «command», «covered», «pollution» and «judgment» are printed whole although each is sung on two or three notes. In stanza 1 the short fourth line is printed twice under the music, inside double quotation marks: «"Up to the judgment, up to the judgment?"» (a wide gap after the second «up», which is sung on two slurred notes); it is given here as printed, on one line. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music (no reference line); each long verse is broken in two by the column width and the turn-overs («not hear him;», «slighted;», «pleasures,», «judgment», «you;», «presence», «ing;», «triumphant,») are set on their own indented lines — they are joined here, one verse per line («warn-»/«ing;» of stanza 5 joined as «warning;»). The short fourth line of each stanza is set further in («Waits to embrace you.», «Leave you forever.», «Deep in their caverns.», «Coming to judgment.»); it is indented more here. «Anon.» in italics after stanza 5. The stanza numbers of the text column are printed without a period («2», «3», …); they are written «2.» … here, like the interlinear «1.», as in the other deliveries of this book. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «:» («Ah !», «him ;», «slighted ;», «you ;», «it ;», «O !», «ing ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («would'st»); the curly double quotes of stanza 1 are written straight. Spelling («would'st», «Saviour», «favor»), punctuation (no stop after «terror», «unfolded», «presence») and capitals are the print's.
