⤢ Full screenSaviour of men, thy searching eyeDoth all mine inmost thoughts descry;Doth aught on earth my wishes raise,Or the world's pleasures, or its praise?
The love of Christ doth me constrainTo seek the wandering souls of men; With cries, entreaties, tears, to save,—To snatch them from the open grave.
For this let men revile my name;No cross I shun, I fear no shame:All hail, reproach, and welcome pain:Only thy terrors, Lord, restrain.
My life, my blood, I here present,If for thy truth they may be spent;Fulfill thy sovereign counsel, Lord;Thy will be done, thy name adored.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1034» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 354, directly under the music of hymn 1032, with the reference line «301, 316, 343,» in italic figures beside it — the line ends with a comma, not a stop (sing to the tunes of hymns 301 ROCKINGHAM, 316 OLDEN or 343 ANVERN, all L. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.8.8.8 are L. M.). Stanzas numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); all four lines of each stanza stand at the same margin. The first word «SAVIOUR» is set in a capital and small capitals; written «Saviour». The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «?» («descry ;», «praise ?», «men ;», «name ;», «shame :», «pain :», «spent ;», «Lord ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «world's» is written straight. «Johann J. Winkler.» in italics (with the swash J of this face), right-aligned, after stanza 4. Spelling («Saviour», «Fulfill»), punctuation (the dash in «to save,—») and capitals are the print's.
