The Church — Baptism

Baptized into our Saviour's death

  • No. 1076
  • Words Anon.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Baptized into our Saviour's death,Our souls to sin must die; With Christ our Lord we live anew,With Christ ascend on high.

2

There by his Father's side he sits,Enthroned divinely fair;Yet owns himself our Brother still,And our fore-runner there.

3

Rise from these earthly trifles, riseOn wings of faith and love;Above, our choicest treasure lies,—And be our hearts above.

4

Let not earth's pleasures draw us down;Lord, give us strength to rise,And through thy strong, attractive power,At last to gain the prize.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1076» (large) with the reference line «395, 598, 523.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 395, 598 or 523; the first number is smeared by a pen stroke of the exemplar — see `uncertainties.md`); the four stanzas stand in the left column of p. 369, below hymn 1075 and «Philip Doddridge.», with «Anon.» in italics after stanza 4. The first word «BAPTIZED» is set in capitals and small capitals; written in ordinary type here. Stanza 1, line 2 («Our souls to sin must die;») and the word «our» of line 1 are gone over with pen and ink in this exemplar; the printed letters are legible under the ink and are transcribed; the pen marks are not. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «4»); written «1.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book. The print sets a thin space before «;» («die ;», «fair ;», «love ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the referenced tunes). Spelling («Saviour», «fore-runner»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
